Heart Health Around the Holidays

As seen on KATV

When you think about the holidays, you usually imagine a season of joyfulness, but oftentimes, the pressure to keep it all together can be a major source of stress. It’s a special time of year with more family, more food and more events, but the disruption of your schedule can “bring an increased risk for heart attacks by forgetting to exercise and take your regular medications, overindulging in holiday food and becoming stressed.”

While stress is often associated with mental health, it can also impact your heart by causing your heart rate and blood pressure to rise. Cardiologist Dr. Morris Kelley recommends “exercising, walking, taking a break from your usual activities or your family and making a schedule, so you’re not pressed for time” to reduce your stress this season.

As you experience all of the wonderful joys the holidays bring, remember to make time for yourself. If you have a family history of heart conditions or are experiencing symptoms, talk to your doctor.
