Summer sunshine – I love it! It makes me smile and reminds me of family picnics and watermelon.

But the sunshine brings hot days with extreme temperatures. We must stay hydrated for our body to function correctly. Our bodies need extra hydration and what a better way than enjoying the perfect summer fruit: watermelon.

Did you know a few slices of watermelon can be equivalent to drinking an extra glass of water? Watermelon is 92% water and is considered a cooling food.

Not only does watermelon taste yummy, but it’s also good for us. Watermelon is only about 46 calories in a cup and is packed with nutrients, including potassium, magnesium and vitamins A and C.

Like many other foods harvested in the summer, watermelon is higher in carbohydrates and natural sugars that fuel our bodies for extra activities. Watermelon also is rich in citrulline, an amino acid that gives us an extra boost and improves our performance while exercising.

There are many ways to eat this scrumptious fruit. Sometimes it’s as simple as washing, slicing and biting into the juicy snack. Other ways might include adding it to smoothies, salsa, salad and even stir-fry.

Enjoy your summer and don’t forget include a few bites of watermelon!
