HeartSmart Screenings: Taking Charge of Your Heart Health

Care and treatment for heart disease should not begin in the Emergency Room. It should begin with a personal choice to take responsibility for your own heart health and get screened. Even if you have no symptoms, you may still be at risk for heart disease and in fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that half of the men who die suddenly of coronary heart disease had no previous symptoms. That’s why the CHI St. Vincent Heart Institute developed the new HeartSmart Screening Program to identify, manage and treat early signs of heart disease.

The new preventative screening program combines a series of tests to identify cardiovascular health risks into a single visit. Patients can schedule the screening at their own convenience to gain greater insight into their true heart health and take action if needed. To help ensure that everyone has access, including those who may be uninsured, CHI St. Vincent also designed the advanced screening to be low cost.

Preventative screenings conducted include:

  • Lipid Panel and Hemoglobin A1C
  • Blood Pressure Evaluation
  • Body Mass Index
  • Heart Attack Risk Assessment (ASCVD)
  • Electrocardiography (EKG/ECG)
  • ABI Peripheral Artery Disease Assessment
  • Cardiac Calcium Scoring CT Scan

The focus is saving lives. Nearly 80-percent of cardiac events can be prevented with early detection and proper care. By detecting early signs of heart disease, patients can also leverage less invasive treatments like medication or lifestyle changes instead of a trip to the Emergency Room.
