Can You See Me?

Mental health is a vital part of our total well-being. It affects how we feel, think and act.

The stigma of “mental health” is not what is was in the past. Even though we are making progress, there is still a long way to go. There should never be shame in seeking help. But, it makes us vulnerable to ask for help, and that is not always easy.

If you see someone with a broken arm you automatically think, “I wonder what happened?” It is evident their arm is hurt. You wouldn’t know how it happened unless you talk with that person. Whatever the case, a broken arm has to be treated and let it heal.

How about a person suffering from emotional or mental distress? They are definitely hurting. The symptoms are not always visible, but the pain is still there. It is important for the person to get the treatment they need and begin to heal. It is imperative that a person talk with someone and not try to carry the burden alone.

We’ve heard the saying, “Don’t worry, be happy.” It sounds like a positive philosophy. Unfortunately, struggles can happen and we are faced with the reality that life isn’t always comprised of happiness free of worry.

Raising awareness about mental health is the only way to educate and support each other. Remember, what is behind the mask really does matter.
