When you've been diagnosed with hypertension, there are many simple lifestyle changes that can help lower your blood pressure. Dr. Anthony Fletcher, Interventional Cardiologist, says you can start with the food you eat.

He says you should monitor your sodium intake.

"We consume a lot of foods that have hidden salts in them. Things that we don't even think about like dill pickles, olives, ketchup, soy sauce, salad dressings, eggs and bacon are all high in salt. Pay attention to the labels on foods because they now tell us how much salt is in our foods," Dr. Fletcher said.

Secondly, you should exercise.

"Exercise is a tremendous way to stay in shape in general. It helps in many conditions, but it's also helpful with blood pressure and lowering stress," Dr. Fletcher said.

Lastly, you need to watch your weight. Being over an ideal weight is another way you can become hypertensive.

"There are many things that we can do in terms of monitoring and doing things to help us with hypertension," said Dr. Fletcher.
