When to Contact a Medical Professional

Most lower back pain and neck pain gets better within a few weeks without treatment. If you're very uncomfortable, you can rest in bed for a day or two, but longer than that does more harm than good. Over-the-counter pain medications often help reduce back pain, as does the application of cold or heat to the painful area.

Call your doctor if your lower back pain hasn't improved at all after three days of home treatment or if your back pain:

  • Is constant or intense, especially at night or when you lie down
  • Spreads down one or both legs, especially if the pain extends below your knee
  • Causes weakness, numbness or tingling in one or both legs
  • Occurs with unintended weight loss
  • Occurs with swelling or redness on your back

Dr. Justin Seale Helps Robert Stroope Say So Long to Back Pain

As seen on THV 11

Real men love their recliners, but when that luxury item becomes a royal pain, a man's got to get out of his big chair and into a gown.

Robert Stroope couldn’t stand, couldn't sit, couldn't lay down flat, and couldn't walk for more than 10 or 15 minutes without excruciating pain in both of his legs. His painful path led him to see Dr. Justin Seale with CHI St. Vincent's Spine Center.

Dr. Seale found that Robert's original back surgery had never healed and another surgery was needed. After surgery, Robert felt relief almost immediately and could even put on his own socks again.
